‘Prevention of alcohol-related health problems in young people’ project
The ‘Prevention of alcohol-related health problems in young people’ project is being piloted at four hospitals. These hospitals are: Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Westfriesgasthuis in Hoorn and the Máxima Medisch Centrum/Catharina Ziekenhuis alliance in Eindhoven. The party behind the project, the Reinier de Graaf Groep hospital in Delft, had already been designated as a participating hospital.
The goal of the project is to implement the protocol on young people with alcohol poisoning developed at the Reinier de Graaf Groep hospital in Delft, to study its applicability and to disseminate knowledge to other hospitals in the country. The pilot scheme will run until June 2010. During this period the participating hospitals are expected to treat roughly 200 young people with acute alcohol problems and provide aftercare. This number will be necessary in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the approach.

The criteria for selecting the participating hospitals included: regional diversification across the Netherlands, the relatively high incidence of alcohol poisoning amongst youths in each hospital’s region, active co-operation with nearby hospitals in the referral of young people with alcohol poisoning, and the development of activities related to youths and alcohol (information campaigns and co-operation with schools, the police, local policy makers etc). Experience gained from the pilot scheme will form the basis for a definitive protocol, supported by the CBO, to be submitted to the relevant professional groups for approval.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is supporting and financing the pilot scheme. The 'Partnership Vroegsignalering Alcohol' (PVA) and Reinier de Graaf Groep will be running the project.
